In April 2026, I went to see the movie Michael, and it reignited my lifelong obsession with Michael Jackson. What struck me most was his versatility — and the question of who, and what, had shaped him into one of the greats.
The more I looked, the clearer it became: Michael Jackson didn’t invent his moves, music, or style from nothing. He combined R&B, rock, funk, and disco at a time when most artists stayed in their lane. His dancing was a synthesis of James Brown, Fred Astaire, and many others. He solved the problem of disunity by creating music that brought people together across race, gender, and culture.
That was when it dawned on me: so many of our greatest innovations and thinkers emerged the same way — not by inventing from nothing, but by synthesising ideas and principles that already existed.
This is how knowledge truly moves forward. We solve new problems with what already exists. But getting from “what is” to “what could be” requires lateral thinking — the willingness to diverge widely before converging on something real.
The trouble is that most meaningful problems demand this kind of interdisciplinary thinking, while the world rewards specialisation. So it rarely occurs to us that the answer to our problem may already be sitting in another domain.
Fostering this cross-domain thinking is difficult. Without broad exposure, finding these hidden connections is mostly luck, taking weeks or months of manual research.
